TYPING ‘SALL ALLĀHU ʿALAY-HI WA-SALLAM’ IN MS WORD AND MS OFFICE DOCUMENTS

All Muslims are obligated to say ‘Sall Allāhu ʿalay-hi wa-sallam’, whenever they hear or write the name of Holy Prophet Mohammed صلى الله عليه وسلم As you have noticed, in the previous sentence I wrote ‘Sall Allāhu ʿalay-hi wa-sallam’ in Arabic after the name of the Holy Prophet. In Holy Quran, Allah says “Indeed Allah and His angels send blessings on the Prophet; O People who believe! Send blessings and abundant salutations upon him” – (Chapter 33, Verse 56).

The phrase ‘Sall Allāhu ʿalay-hi wa-sallam’ means ‘May Allah honor him and grant him peace’. While Muslims do say ‘Sall Allāhu ʿalay-hi wa-sallam’ when they hear the name of Holy Prophet Mohammed ( صلى الله عليه وسلم), but when the name is being written in MSWord or Outlook, they face with challenge of writing the phrase in Arabic font. As you can see, it’s not easy to type the phrase in Arabic, especially when you are working on an English keyboard. To overcome this challenge, it became a commonly accepted practice among Muslims to write the English translation of ‘صلى الله عليه وسلم, that is ‘May Allah honor him and grant him peace’.

However, some people, in order to save some time and energy, have further reduced the phrase to ‘Peace be upon Him’. If one translates ‘Peace be upon Him’ in Arabic, it is ‘عليه السلام‎’ but not ‘صلى الله عليه وسلم’. Muslims are obligated to say ‘ عليه السلام ’ for archangels and Prophets of Islam except Prophet Mohammed (صلى الله عليه وسلم). For Prophet Mohammed (صلى الله عليه وسلم ), a Muslim must say صلى الله عليه وسلم. Yet, many of the Muslims, continue to use the phrase ‘Peace be upon Him’ for Prophet Mohammed (صلى الله عليه وسلم) too.

In recent times, as an act of laziness, Muslims have started using the abbreviation ‘PBUH’ for ‘Peace be Upon Him’. Several Islamic scholars have severely criticized such abbreviation. Several Fatwas (orders based on Islamic laws) have given against usage of abbreviations instead of writing صلى الله عليه وسلم . I must accept that, I have also committed this sin of writing abbreviation. I pray to Allah for forgive me for my sins.

So, this demands a question, how should a Muslim get over the challenge of writing ‘صلى الله عليه وسلم’ in Arabic font and not commit any sin by using abbreviations? Is there a solution to it?

I did some research on this and found that, there is indeed an elegant and easy solution. In computers, every character is assigned a unique code called ‘Unicode’. Formally, ‘Unicode’ is a computing industry standard for the consistent encoding, representation and handling of text expressed in most of the world’s writing systems. Whether it is English or French or Arabic, every character that can be typed, is assigned a Unicode. In order to reduce the length of the code, hexadecimal system is used instead of decimal system. Without going into too much of technical details, here’s an elegant solution to typing ﷺ in a MS word or any MS Office documents.

To type ﷺ in MS Word or any MS office Document:

(1) Type FDFA.

(2) Type ‘Alt+x’. (Hold on to ‘Alt’ key and press ‘x’ key.) As soon as you type ‘Alt+x”, ‘FDFA’ is converted to ﷺ

Unicode for ‘ﷺ’ is ‘FDFA’.

Below table gives Unicode Values of common Arabic Words/Phrases:

Arabic Phrase/Word

English Transliteration

Unicode

Allah

FDF2

Sall Allāhu ʿalay-hi wa-sallam

FDFA

Mohammed

FDF4

Akbar

FDF3

Rasool

FDF6

Jallajalaalahu

FDFB

Salla

FDF9

Wa-salam

FDF8

Alayhe

FDF7

FDF5

Qala

FDF1

Salla

FDF0

For example, if you want to type ﷲ, then

(1) Type ‘FDF2’.

(2) Type ‘Alt + x’ (Hold on to ‘Alt’ key and press ‘x’ key). MS Word or any Office document will then convert FDF2 to ﷲ.

For the Unicode for all the Arabic characters, refer to thislink.

Note: This technique works for all MS Office products. In case, due to some issue, if it doesn’t work for you, then add ‘U+’ to the Unicode and repeat the steps mentioned above. For example, for typing ﷺ, type ‘U+FDFA’ and type Alt+x.

To know the general techniques for inputting characters via Unicode in Windows, Mac, Linux, etc., check this Wikipedia link. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unicode_input).

Yoga and Muslim

Yoga, its origins and the ruling on practising it

Is it permissible for us as Muslim to practice yoga, as it is originally a kind of Hindu worship?

Praise be to Allaah.

Firstly:

There are differences of opinion among contemporary scholars on the ruling on practising yoga. Some of them are of the view that it is not allowed at all, others are of the view that it is permissible without any reservations. Yet others differentiated between some of its practices and others; they allowed those that are in accordance with sharee‘ah and forbade those that are contrary to it.

None of them denied – as far as we know – that the origin of this practice stems from idolatrous Hindu beliefs then Buddhism. Hence those who allow it in all cases took away from it anything that has to do with beliefs and spiritual matters, and passed the ruling on it on the basis that it is regarded as physical exercise. Those who forbade it did so because of its religious origins and the resemblance to those idol worshippers, and because of the harm it causes to the body, and other reasons. As for those who differentiate between one type and another, their opinion is not acceptable because it is not possible to eliminate the bad and because people are not able to distinguish between what is permissible and what is forbidden in it.

So it is both spiritual and physical exercise which was originally aimed at reaching oblivion and entering into a state of connection with God!

In the book al-Yoga wa’l-Tanaffus (yoga and breathing) by Muhammad ‘Abd al-Fattaah Faheem (p. 19), it says:

“Yoga in the sacred Indian language means union and contact with God, i.e., union between the body, the mind and God which helps man attain knowledge and wisdom and develops his thought by developing his knowledge of life; it protects him from sectarianism, religious fanaticism, narrowmindedness and shortsightedness when searching; it makes him live a life of contentment both physically and spiritually.”

In al-Mu‘jam al-Falsafi by Jameel Sulayba (2/590) it says:

“Yoga is a Sanskrit word which means union; it is used to refer to a kind of spiritual exercise that is practised by the wise men of India for the purpose of union with the universal spirit. Yoga is not a school of philosophical thought; rather it is an artistic way of doing some exercises that release the soul from physical and mental gravity and take it step-by-step towards reality. The Yogi is the wise man who practices this way.” End quote.

Both quotes taken from Mazaahirat al-Tashabbuh bi’l-Kuffaar fi’l-‘Asr al-Hadeeth wa Atharuha ‘ala al-Muslimeen.

In the definition of Yoga we see that it means union, i.e., union of man with the spirit, which is the universal spirit, by which they mean God. Hence the aim of this practice is to be a way of combining all other religions. Dr Ahmad Shalabi – who is a specialist in the religions of India – says:

“The union of Buddha with the Hindu gods is nothing but a return to belief in ‘Jnana Yoga’ i.e., the ‘path of knowledge’ which sees truth in all religions and philosophies. But this truth is only a particle of the greater, complete truth. This school of thought does not object to any religion or philosophy; it thinks that any religion or philosophy is not everything and is not the whole truth. The one who believes in this way of thinking does not belong to any religion or school of thought, because he regards the followers of all different religions as his brothers, no matter how they differ. So Jnana Yoga is a way that encompasses all beliefs and refuses to be restricted by any of them. We should highlight the fact that propagating and promoting this way of thinking is aimed at fighting Islam indirectly. I have seen these attempts in several countries. Islam is the force that defeated both Christian and Buddhist missionaries, so if they can manage to divert people in one way or another – even in the name of Jnana Yoga that encompasses all beliefs and does not restrict itself to any one of them – that is a great victory for them. After they have managed to divert the Muslim from Islam at the end of this smart trick, then it is possible to make him doubt and then pull him into another sphere. So let the Muslim beware of Yoga and its trickery and those who promote it.”

Adyaan al-Hind al-Kubra, p. 174

We think that forbidding it altogether is the correct approach. We have studied the words of many concerning this practice, and we have decided to sum up the comments on it from a book that deals specifically with the ruling on this practice, by a writer whom we trust with regard to his methodology and beliefs; he is a doctor who knows what he is saying when he criticises it even from a health point of view. This writer is Dr Faaris ‘Alwaan and his book is called al-Yoga fi Mizaan al-Naqd al-‘Ilmi, which was published by Darussalam in Cairo. Everything that we will quote below is from this book, but it should be noted that we cannot quote everything that it says in the book. Hence we will limit it to a definition of this practice and the discussion of the Islamic ruling on it; whoever wants to know more may refer to the book.

Secondly:

What is Yoga?

Yoga means union; one of its prominent teachers says that it is union of man with the spirit.

Yoga involves various exercises and rituals, but the most important and most famous of them is an exercise called Surya Namaskar [known in English as the “Sun Salutation”], which means in Sanskrit: “prostration to the sun on eight parts of the body”. And they defined these parts as the two feet, the two knees, the two hands, the chest and the forehead.

It is preferable for the one who practices yoga to be naked, especially the chest, back and thighs; to face the sun when it is rising and when it is setting if he wants Yoga that is sound and beneficial; and to fix his gaze and focus his attention on the disc of the sun, and be attached to it completely, which includes his body, his faculties, his mind and his heart. If he is in a built-up area and cannot see the sun, he is allowed to draw the disc of the sun in front of him on the wall. One of them said: If the one who is practising yoga is a believer in a religion and is concerned about committing an act of disbelief, there is nothing wrong with him drawing any image in front of him and focusing on it completely!

Yoga also includes pondering one’s body deeply and thinking of and examining every part of the body, starting with the toes and going up to the head when waking up and before getting up from one’s bed, and doing the opposite, from the head down to the toes just before sleeping, and it is not allowed to forget or be distracted from this important task!

Whoever wants to benefit from yoga should also be vegetarian.

And he has to repeat specific words out loud whilst doing these exercises. These words are called mantras, the most famous of which are the beeja mantras, which are hram, hreem, hraim, hraum, hara. Some syllables are also repeated in yoga, such as Aum (or Om).

In addition to that, it is essential to repeat the twelve names of the sun, because this is a major and important part of Yoga.

Names of the sun include:

Rafanama, which means, “I bow my head to you, O one whom everyone praises.”

Suryanama, which means, “I bow my head to you, O guide of all.”

Bahaanafinama, which means, “I bow my head to you, O bestower of beauty.”

Safeetarnama, which means, “I bow my head to you, O bestower of life” etc.

And they claim that this repetition is very beneficial.

One of those who practices yoga says that he wakes up at 3.30 a.m. and continues practising yoga and offering its special prayers until 6:15 a.m. And in the evening he does the same thing from 6 p.m. until 6:30 p.m.

Thus he spends three and a quarter hours every day practising yoga, and he says that some of them spend more time than that, claiming that the more time they spend on it the more beneficial it is.

Al-Yoga fi Mizaan al-Naqd al-‘Ilmi, p. 13-18

Thirdly:

The Islamic ruling on practising yoga

To sum up, it is not permissible for the Muslim to practice yoga at all, whether he does it on the basis of belief or imitating others, or because he is seeking a particular so-called benefit. That is due to a number of reasons which we may conclude from what is mentioned above, and which we will sum up as follows:

-1-

Because Yoga is contrary to Tawheed and involves associating other deities with Allah, may He be exalted, and because it involves prostrating to the sun and repeating its names.

Allah says (interpretation of the meaning):

“Say (O Muhammad): I am commanded only to worship Allaah (Alone) and not to join partners with Him”

[al-Ra‘d 13:36]

“If you join others in worship with Allâh, (then) surely (all) your deeds will be in vain, and you will certainly be among the losers”

[al-Zumar 39:65].

-2-

Because it involves imitation of idol worshippers and resembling them, and the Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) said: “Whoever imitates a people is one of them.” Narrated by Ahmad, Abu Dawood and al-Tabaraani from Ibn ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with him).

-3-

Because some of its practices are harmful to most people and lead to serious health consequences for them. Some of its practices involve sitting in a very strange and shameful way, and sitting in a lazy way, oblivious to what is going on around one. This is also harmful from a health and psychological point of view. The Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) said: “There should be neither harming nor reciprocating harm.” Narrated by Ahmad and Ibn Maajah from Ibn ‘Abbaas (may Allah be pleased with him).

-4-

Because it is a waste of time doing something that does not bring anything but harm and loss in this world, and calamity and despair in the Hereafter. The trustworthy Messenger (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) said: “A person’s feet will not move on, on the Day of Resurrection, until he has been asked about four things: his life and how he spent it, his knowledge and what he did with it, his wealth and from where he acquired it and on what he spent it, and his body and how he used it.” Narrated by al-Tirmidhi from Abu Barzah.

-5-

Because it is a clear call to imitate animals and detracts from human dignity, such as: adopting nakedness, resting on all fours in most of the exercises (Surya Namaskar or sun salutation) and the special posture in the third and eighth exercises.

-6-

Because many of those who tried to practice what is called scientific yoga or behavioural therapy fell into the pit of drugs and addiction, and this remedy has been proven to be ineffective and of no benefit.

-7-

Because it is based on lies and charlatanry; its promoters rely on deceit and twisting the facts in spreading it. Thus it attracted the attention of a large number of those who are simple-natured and many of those who are weak in faith.

-8-

Because a few of those who practice yoga or some other esoteric or deviant trends may perform extraordinary feats, people are deceived by it. But in most cases they are only using devils among the jinn as in the case of magic and so on, and this is haraam according to Islam.

-9-

Most of the advice given by the promoters of yoga is harmful to the individual, including the following:

(a)     Nakedness and what it causes of cultural, sexual, psychological and physical diseases.

(b)    Exposing the skin to the sun. We have seen the harm that this causes, especially when there is lengthy exposure to the sun.

(c)     Fixing the gaze on the disc of the sun, which causes severe damage to the eyes.

(d)    Encouraging a vegetarian diet for which Allah has not revealed any authority.

Modi and his 'Sarkari Mussalmaans'

The least the leaders who met Modi could have done was to highlight the plight of Muslim riot victims, but they chose to ignore it, so privileged they must have felt to be in the prime minister's presence, says Syed Firdaus Ashraf.
In 1993, I stayed in a camp for riot victims, following the Mumbai riots. My uncle's home had been attacked by Hindus. My family feared we would be targeted the next day as our home was located only a lane away.
Slogans like 'Mussalmaan ke do hi sthan, Pakistan ya Kabristan (Muslims have only two places: Pakistan or the graveyard)' echoed through many streets as Hindu mobs torched Muslim homes and shops in the north-west Mumbai suburb of Malad where we -- my father then worked for one of India's leading State-owned petroleum companies -- lived.
Twenty-two years later, Pakistan is where Union Minister of State for Minority Affairs Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi wants Muslims to go if they want to eat beef!
In 1993, we took sanctuary in a family friend's home in Millat Nagar, a Muslim-dominated area in Andheri, north-west Mumbai, part of the now famed Lokhandwala Complex. A relief camp had been set up for thousands of Muslims displaced from their homes -- helpless citizens of India.
No politician visited the refugee -- we were refugees fleeing a hateful time -- camp. The police kept its distance from the camp as there was much anger among the riot victims against the Indian State for failing to protect lives and property.
I realised then that once you are targeted for your Muslim identity during a riot, no one comes to your help. Be it the police, politicians, the ruling party or the Opposition parties.
No one gives a damn, really.
The only people who ask after your wellbeing are the media.
Only one politician came to the camps at that time, to ask after the wellbeing of the Muslim victims of Mumbai -- Sunil Dutt, then a Congress member of Parliament. For this -- for inquiring about the conditions at these camps -- Mr Dutt was abused by Bharatiya Janata Party and Shiv Sena politicians.
I saw Mr Dutt distribute relief material and plead with Muslims to believe in Indian secularism which was maimed in the Mumbai riots.
Ten years later, when, as a journalist, I met Mr Dutt, I told him how impressed I had been that he had stood for the cause of secularism in those horrific times.
I had to ask him a question that had been gnawing at me all those years: How do you recognise whether a person is secular or not?
'Secularism is in the eyes of people,' Mr Dutt replied without a blink. 'You don't have to prove it. You just see in people's eyes and you realise it instantly.'
People like Sunil Dutt are above religion, they will stand up for secularism till their last breath. He was one of a kind, a truly secular politician. The least the leaders who met Modi could have done was to highlight the plight of Muslim riot victims, but they chose to ignore it, so privileged they must have felt to be in the prime minister's presence, says Syed Firdaus Ashraf.

People like Sunil Dutt are above religion, they will stand up for secularism till their last breath. He was one of a kind, a truly secular politician.
Twelve years later, when Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with 30 Muslim 'leaders' last week to highlight his government's secular credentials, I recalled what Sunil Dutt had told me.
These 'Sarkari Mussalmaans' -- that is what these 30 'leaders' are in my mind as they certainly did not articulate the community's concerns -- did not ask Modi about the plight of Ballabgarh's Muslims.
Ballabgarh, located just 30 kilometres outside Delhi, is in Haryana, a state where the BJP is in power. The Muslims of Ballabgarh fled their homes and took refuge at a police station after Jats from the village torched their homes following a dispute over constructing a mosque in the village.
This mosque was being built after the Jats had taken the Muslims to court over the dispute and the court had ruled in the Muslims' favour. For 10 days, the Muslims stayed put at the police station, the only sanctuary for them, fearing for their lives. It was during this time that these 'Sarkari Mussalmaans' met Modi in New Delhi.
It would not been so bad had Modi had not told these leaders, 'Judge me by my actions.' The least these 'Sarkari Mussalmaans' could have done was to highlight the plight of the Muslim riot victims to Modi, but they chose to ignore it, so privileged were they to be in the prime minister's presence.
The prime minister utilised the occasion to grandly state that he did not believe in politics that divides.
The fact is that the Muslims of Ballabgarh were rendered homeless, precisely because they were Muslims living under a BJP government. This fact did not seem to bother either the Muslim 'leaders' who met Modi nor did it bother the prime minister apparently.
In the 19th century, the famous Urdu poet Akbar Allahabadi wrote:
Qaum ke gham mein dinner khatey hai Hukkam ke saath
Ranjh leader ko bahut hai, magar aaram ke saath.
(In grief over the sad state of the community, our leaders dine with the authorities
Filled with sorrow they are, but sunk in their comfortable ways.
)
Akbar Allahabadi wrote these trenchant words after witnessing the plight of Muslims in the 19th century. He meant the verses to taunt leaders who spoke to the hukkam (the British) about the community's sorry state.
What an irony! More than a hundred years later, the scene has changed so little. A group of 30 self-styled Muslim leaders meet the prime minister to build bridges between the community and him, and the least they can do is ask him what he has done to protect the lives of ordinary Muslims, in Ballabgarh today, elsewhere tomorrow.
Ideally, these Muslim leaders should have visited Ballabgarh along with Modi, met the village's terrified Muslims and reassured them that the prime minister would be available for them even if they 'knock on his doors at midnight,' to use Modi's own words.
To do that, I guess you need to have the heart and soul of Sunil Dutt.

Emperor Akbar :The Real Father of the Indian Nation

' Mahatma ' Gandhi is called the father of the Indian nation. But , as I have pointed out in my previous posts ( see ' Gandhi--A British Agent ', ' Gandhi and Caste ', ' Here is the Father of your nation ', etc on my blog justicekatju.blogspot.in ), Gandhi in fact was objectively a British agent and did great harm to India. He has wrongly been called the Father of the nation.

The real Father of the Indian nation was the great Mughal Emperor Akbar ( 1542-1605 ). What we Indians are today is largely because of the solid foundation laid by Akbar, who ( along with Ashoka ) was perhaps the greatest ruler the world has ever seen. Because of Akbar, we are Indians today, not just Hindus, Muslims, Sikhs, Christians, Jains, Parsis etc.

And yet the tragedy is that many Hindus call Akbar a Muslim, while many Muslims call him a Hindu ( because he observed many Hindu festivals and ceremonies ), which proves my point that 90% Hindus and 90% Muslims in India are fools. The truth is that while being a Sunni Muslim, Akbar was a true Indian.

Akbar saw that India was a country of great diversity ( see my article ' What is India ? ' on my blog justicekatju.blogspot.in and the website kgfindia.com). Hence the only way to keep India united was by giving equal respect to all communities and sects. It was because of this realization that Akbar adopted the wise policy of Suleh-e-Kul, that is, Universal Toleration of all Religions ( his attempt to found a common religion called ' Din-e-Ilahi was a failure, but ' Suleh-e-Kul was a grand success ).

In this respect, Akbar was far ahead of his times, and far ahead of even Europeans who were at that time massacring each other in the name of religion, Catholics massacring Protestants e.g. the St. Bartholomew Day massacre in 1572 by Catholics of the minority Protestant community ( called Huguenots ) in France, the massacre of Protestants by the Spanish Duke of Alba in Holland, the burning at the stake ( auto de fe ) of heretics during the Inquisition, etc, the subsequent massacre of Catholics in Ireland by Cromwell, and the mutual massacre of Catholics and Protestants in the Thirty Year War in Germany ( 1618-1648 ) as well as the killing of Jews by Christians throughout Europe ( culminating in the Holocaust in the Second World War, 1939-1945 ).

In my judgment in the Supreme Court in Hinsa Virodhak Sangh vs.Mirzapur Moti Koresh Jamaat, 2011 ( see online ) I observed :
" The architect of modern India was the great Mughal Emperor Akbar who gave equal respect to people of all communities and appointed them to the highest offices on their merits irrespective of their religion, caste, etc.

The Emperor Akbar held discussions with scholars of all religions and gave respect not only to Muslim scholars, but also to Hindus, Christians, Parsis, Sikhs, etc. Those who came to his court were given respect and the Emperor heard their views, sometimes alone, and sometimes in the Ibadatkhana (Hall of Worship, which still exists in Fatehpur Sikri), where people of all religions assembled and discussed their views in a tolerant spirit.

The Emperor declared his policy of Suleh-e-Kul, which meant universal tolerance of all religions and communities. He abolished Jeziya in 1564 and the pilgrim tax in 1563 on Hindus and permitted his Hindu wife to continue to practise her own religion even after their marriage. This is evident from the Jodha Bai Palace in Fatehpur Sikri which is built on Hindu architectural pattern.

In 1578, the Parsi theologian Dastur Meherji Rana was invited to the Emperor 's court and he had detailed discussions with Emperor Akbar and acquainted him about the Parsi religion. Similarly, the Jesuit Priests Father Antonio Monserrate, Father Rodolfo Acquaviva and Father Francisco Enriques etc. also came to the Emperor 's court on his request and acquainted him about the Christian religion. The Emperor also became acquainted with Sikhism and came into contact with Guru Amar Das and Guru Ram Das (see`The Mughal Empire by R.C. Majumdar).

Thus, as stated in the Cambridge History of India (Vol.IV The Mughal Period) Emperor Akbar conceived the idea of becoming the father of all his subjects, rather than the leader of only the Muslims, and he was far ahead of his times. As mentioned by Pt. Jawahar Lal Nehru in `The Discovery of India , " Akbar 's success is astonishing, for he created a sense of oneness among the diverse elements of India ".

In 1582, the Emperor invited and received a Jain delegation consisting of Hiravijaya Suri, Bhanuchandra Upadhyaya and Vijayasena Suri. Jainism, with its doctrine of non-violence, made a profound impression on him and influenced his personal life. He curtailed his food and drink and ultimately abstained from flesh diet altogether for several months in the year. He renounced hunting which was his favourite pastime, restricted the practice of fishing and released prisoners and caged birds. Slaughter of animals was prohibited on certain days and ultimately in 1587 for about half the days in the year.

Akbar 's contact with Jains began as early as 1568, when Padma Sunder who belonged to the Nagpuri Tapagaccha was honoured by him.

As mentioned in Dr. Ishwari Prasad 's `The Mughal Empire' , the Jains had a great influence on the Emperor. A disputation was held in Akbar's Court between the Jain monks Buddhisagar of Tapgaccha and Suddha Kirti of Khartargaccha on the subject of Jain religious ceremony called Pansadha ( probably Paryushan, which is the most important Jain function ) in which the winner was given the title Jagatguru by Akbar.

Having heard of the virtues and learning of Hir Vijaya Suri in 1582 the Emperor sent an invitation to him through the Mughal Viceroy at Ahmedabad. Suri accepted it in the interests of his religion. He was offered money by the Viceroy to defray the expenses of the journey but he refused. The delegation consisting of Hir Vijaya Suri, Bhanu Chandra Upadhyaya and Vijaya Sen Suri started on their journey and walked on foot to Fatehpur Sikri,( begging alms on the way, as was their custom ), and were received with great honour befitting imperial guests.

Hir Vijaya Suri had discussions with Abul Fazl. He propounded the doctrine of Karma and an impersonal God. When he was introduced to the Emperor he defended true religion and told him that the foundation of faith should be daya (compassion) and that God is one though he is differently named by different faiths.

The Emperor received instruction in Dharma from Suri who explained the Jain doctrines to him. He discussed the existence of God and the qualities of a true Guru and recommended non-killing (Ahinsa). The Emperor was persuaded to forbid the slaughter of animals for six months in Gujarat and to abolish the confiscation of the property of deceased persons, the Sujija Tax (Jeziya) and a Sulka (possibly a tax on pilgrims) and to free caged birds and prisoners. He stayed for four years at Akbar' s court and left for Gujarat in 1586. He imparted a knowledge of Jainism to Akbar and obtained various concessions to his religion. The Emperor is said to have taken a vow to refrain from hunting and expressed a desire to give up meat- eating for ever as it had become repulsive to him.

When Suri was leaving for Ahmedabad, the Emperor presented to him Padma Sundar scriptures which were preserved in his palace. He offered them to Suri as a gift and he was pressed by the Emperor to accept them. The killing of animals was forbidden for certain days.

Emperor Akbar was a propagator of Suleh-i-Kul (universal toleration) at a time when Europeans
were indulging in religious massacres e.g. the St. Bartholomew Day massacre in 1572 of Protestants, (called Huguenots) in France by the Catholics, the burning at the stake of Protestants by Queen Mary of England, the massacre by the Duke of Alva of millions of people for their resistance to Rome and the burning at the stake of Jews during the Spanish Inquisition. We may also mention the subsequent massacre of the Catholics in Ireland by Cromwell, and the mutual massacre of Catholics and Protestants in Germany during the thirty year war from 1618 to 1648 in which the population of Germany was reduced from 18 million to 12 million. Thus, Emperor Akbar was far ahead of even the Europeans of his times.

Emperor Akbar himself abstained from eating meat on Fridays and Sundays and on some other days, as has been mentioned in the Ain-I-Akbari by Abul Fazl.
It was because of the wise policy of toleration of the Great Emperor Akbar that the Mughal empire lasted for so long, and hence the same wise policy of toleration alone can keep our country together despite so much diversity. ".

Emperor Akbar was greatly attached to Dargah Ajmer Sharif, the shrine of the great saint Khwaja Moinuddin Chishty. The first time he went there he travelled on foot in plain white clothes all the way from Agra, and thereafter too had annual pilgrimages to the shrine for many years, travelling on foot for the last 10 or 12 miles to Ajmer.
Apart from that, he had great faith in the great living saint Sheikh Salim Chishty, who used to live in a cave in the Sikri hill. On his first visit there ( when Sikri was just a forest on a hill ) the Emperor walked the 40 miles to it from Agra in the plain clothes of a pilgrim, and told the saint of his sorrow because he had no son to carry on his dynasty. The saint said that God would give him 4 sons, and when the first was born ( of Jodha Bai ) he was named Salim, after the saint, and a new capital called Fatehpur Sikri was built at Sikri.
Akbar had great respect for all religions, and there was not a trace of communalism in him. Hindus like Todar Mal, Man Singh, Birbal etc held high positions in his Court, and were often military commanders as well.

The tragedy is that the 90% fools and idiots living in India today do not even know who is the real Father of their Nation !

It is said that Gandhi gave us Independence in 1947. This is totally false. In fact by regularly preaching Hindu religious ideas like Ramraj, goraksha ( cow protection ), varnashram ( caste system ), brahmacharya ( celibacy ) etc in open public meetings, and thus constantly injecting religion into politics, he was driving Muslims towards a fundamentalist organization like the Muslim League. This served the British policy of divide and rule. By diverting the genuine revolutionary independence struggle against the British in India started by great freedom fighters like Bhagat Singh, Chandrashekhar Azad, Surya Sen ( Masterda ), Ashfaqulla, Ram Prasad Bismil, Rajguru, Sukhdev, Khudiram Bose, etc to harmless and nonsensical channels like 'satyagrah ' Gandhi was ensuring that India should not become independent.

Why then did the British leave ? Surely it was not because of the dramas Gandhi was doing ( fasting, salt march, etc ). Does anyone give up an Empire because of this ?
A genuine freedom struggle is always an armed struggle, because no Imperialist gives up his Empire without an armed fight. Did the Americans fight their War of Independence against the British ( 1775-1781 ) by presenting flowers and bouquets to the British, or with a Continental Army under George Washington ? Did Bolivar ( called the ' Great Liberator ) fight the Spaniards in Latin America with his batallions, or by satyagrah ? Did Ho Chi Min fight the French with guns or by salt marches ? Did the Chinese fight the Japanese by fasting and singing Raghupati Raghav Raja Ram ?

No, it was because Germany attacked England in the Second World War and considerably weakened it ( in fact Germany would probably have conquered England if America had not helped it ) that England, realizing that she could not continue holding on to India politically, withdrew. Also, there was American pressure on the British to withdraw.

It is high time that Indians realize the truth and know who is the real Father of our Nation

Be so close to the Qur’an that…

As-salamu `alaykum wa rahmatullahi Barkathuhu

Over the past year, I had been receivng a ‘Be so close to the Qur’an’ series in various social media, i found it so very impressive ,no one has put it so beautifully before !and I thought to collate it all here

Be so close to the Qur’an that with every turn of its page, your heart also turns. You undergo a change of character; and come out better. You come closer to Allah and you understand your religion more.

Be so close to the Qur’an that not only do you consider it to be your companion in life, but it also considers *you* to be its companion both here and on Yawm al-Qiyamah (Day of Resurrection).

Be so close to the Qur’an that whenever you open to read it, it draws you in deeply and takes you on amazing journeys through power concepts and thought-provoking dialogue, through history and the undisputed facts of the future and Hereafter; learning life lessons and learning about yourself. The journey doesn’t end until you end it (by closing the Book).

Be so close to the Qur’an that you make it your first point of judgement and guidance when you quarrel or fall out with a relative, spouse, friend or stranger. You place it before you with the sincerity to resolve matters and follow the causes for peace.

“… If they both desire reconciliation, Allah will cause harmony between them. Indeed, Allah is ever Knowing and All-Aware.” [al-Nisa: 35]

Be so close to the Qur’an that if you happen to miss your daily portion of it, it preoccupies your mind and you are not at peace until you take your regular nourishment from it.

Be so close to the Qur’an that just hearing the words, “O you who believe…” strikes something within your heart. You are all ears and attentive; ready to respond.

Be so close to the Qur’an that you truly feel its blessings in your life.

Be so close to the Qur’an that while many love listening to music and lyrical tunes, for you nothing can beat the melodious recital of your favourite Surah (chapter).

Be so close to the Qur’an that you actually walk F E A R L E S S. In every place, at all times, and every stage of your life. Your fear is only from One Being, and He is above His Throne, `azza wa jall.

Be so close to the Qur’an that the mere contemplation of a verse brings tears to your eyes.

Be so close to the Qur’an that after a long and tiring day, all you want to do is make wudhu’ (ablution) and sit down with a cuppa tea in a cosy spot for some heartwarming reading and reflection.

Be so close to the Qur’an that it becomes the first companion you turn to when you need to hear comforting words, or a shoulder to lean on in difficult times, or guidance in times of confusion. It becomes your first point of contact alongside salah (prayer) and du’a (supplication).

Be so close to the Qur’an that its melodious verses drown away the meaningless chatter of this world and you prefer listening to it instead of listening to much of Mankind

Be so close to the Qur’an that you become recognised for it; in your character and the way you carry yourself through life.

Be so close to the Qur’an that being in its company makes you feel like you are in the best company; the most serene, thought-provoking, heart-warming, and tranquil of gatherings. People think you are alone… but you are anything but alone.

Be so close to the Qur’an that you can’t fathom the idea of dying without having memorised it. You can’t see yourself standing in front of Allah in complete ignorance of His Book, His Verses, His Words.

Be so close to the Qur’an that everytime you hear a verse, you stop and check yourself against it. Is it a command/prohibition which you adhered by? Divine advice which you’ve taken on board? Wisdom which you’ve learnt from? Check yourself against every verse and be the first to benefit from it, because you are that close.

Be so close to the Qur’an that before embarking on the path of knowledge, you first immerse yourself in it. You do not place any branch of ‘ilm before knowledge of the Book, and thus you spend your early learning days learning all about it.

Be so close to the Qur’an that its verses replay melodiously in your mind…

Be so close to the Qur’an that you can find for yourself a verse reflecting every moment of your life. You will always know what to do.

Be so close to the Qur’an that the worldy chaos around you only increases your yearning towards secluding yourself, reciting its verses and being in its beautiful company.

Be so close to the Qur’an that nothing, nothing can come in between it and you.

Be so close to the Qur’an that a day without it leaves you feeling empty and deprived.
