Glad to note that Peaceful polling is underway in eastern Uttar Pradesh by-elections in Gorakhpur and Phulpur Lok Sabha constituencies.
The Gorakhpur constituency is of special significance to the BJP in general and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath in particular, as he has won the Lok Sabha seat five consecutive times
Long queues has been witnessed outside polling stations. The counting of votes for the seat will be held on March 14. The Gorakhpur parliamentary constituency consists of the segments of Caimpiyarganj, Pipraich, Gorakhpur Urban, Gorakhpur Rural and Sahajanwa. There are 19.49 lakh voters in the Gorakhpur parliamentary constituency, according to Election Commission data.
Gorakhpur by-election.
There are a total of 10 candidates fighting for the Gorakhpur by-election. Upendra Shukla is contesting the Gorakhpur by-election from the BJP. He is seen as being instrumental in the party winning huge victories in Uttar Pradesh's Purvanchal region in last year's assembly elections. The Congress has fielded Suhita Chatterjee Kareem as its candidate, while the SP is contesting the Gorakhpur election with the Peace Party and Nishad Party, which has fielded Praveen Kumar Nishad as its candidate.
The Gorakhpur seat is important for the BJP largely because it is the home turf of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, a seat from where he has never lost an election since 1998 when he first contested the Lok Sabha elections. And it is this prestige associated with the seat that would make a win for the Samajwadi Party-led opposition particularly sweet and will lead to new startegies in comming assembly elections in other state.
According to the Election Commission, as many as 4,728 Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) machines are being used in the bypoll and provisions for web-casting from 95 critical booths have been made.Bihar's Araria constituency
The Araria Lok Sabha seat became vacant after the death of RJD MP Mohammad Taslimuddin last year. The Araria parliamentary constituency consists of assembly segments of Narpatganj, Raniganj (SC), Forbesganj, Araria, Jokhihat and Sikti.
In Araria, a seat that fell vacant after the death of RJD lawmaker Mohd Taslimuddin, the party has fielded his son Sarfaraz Alam, looking to capitalise on Muslim and Yadav voters who make up a big chunk of the electorate. Mr Alam is locked in a direct contest with the BJP's Pradip Singh who came second in the 2014 general elections but had won the seat in 2009.
