Keep the burqa, remove the veil

A college in Mangalore has banned girls from wearing burqa in class and writing examinations, but are allowed to don the outfit outside in its campus. The ban has been brought into effect by St Aloysius College, an autonomous educational institution.
Following is the Blog written by MR VIVIAN FERNANDES an Alumni, St Aloysius College,  Mangalore.originally written in

Blogs
Vivian FernandesMy first reaction on reading the news that St Aloysius College in Mangalore had restricted the use of burqa was that it was unnecessarily provocative. I had studied in the college many moons ago. It has a reputation for discipline but I do not recall the Jesuits who ran it as punctilious sticklers for rules. We thought they were broad minded unlike the prissy principal of the all-girls St Agnes College who was mean enough to adjourn classes earlier than usual one afternoon so that few would greet the customary victory procession that we took out after the student union election. But that diabolic game failed as St Agnes girls lined up the street rather than go home early! Some of our teachers were academically accomplished. Our principal, a priest, was a well-known botanist, and engaged in research, which greatly elevated him in our eyes. The Tamil accountancy teacher was as extremely dedicated as he was shy, and had a temper to match. Our college made us proud. We looked up to it - literally. It was a majestic building. It sat atop a hill like a tiara and commanded a panoramic view of a valley carpeted with palm fronds that shimmered in the clear noon sun like the waters of the Arabian Sea beyond. We flaunted the college chapel. It was covered from floor to ceiling with frescoes.
Mangalore is multi-religious. There are a sizeable number of Muslims (22 per cent) and Catholics (9 per cent). Religious identities are acute. In conversation among themselves is it not unusual for Catholics, for instance, to refer to people from other communities as 'that mapli' (mapilla or Muslim), 'konkno' (Konkani-speaking Gaud Sarawat Brahmin) or 'bonkyancho' (of the Bunt or Shetty community). In this sense Mangalore is a salad platter, not a soup bowl. It is diversity that makes Mangalore so vibrant and fascinating. There were some hotspots, but on the whole the place was communally inert. The communities were settled and they had learnt to live with each other.
In the past three decades or so there has been a resurgence of religiosity. Fundamentalist Christian cults are finding recruits, mostly among Catholics. Muslims working in West Asia have imported Wahhabism, an intolerant version of Islam. But it is the government-backed RSS and its affiliates that poison social relations. They do not hesitate to use violence. They have kept up tension by insinuating themselves into Hindu-Muslim love affairs, intercepting cattle meant for slaughter and carrying on a campaign against (fictional) forcible conversions. In this negatively-charged atmosphere, a restriction on the burqa in the classroom, I thought, would be misconstrued as yet another attack on the Muslim community, this time by a minority institution.
It is a charge that worries Prof AM Narahari, who joined the college when I was in the final year and is now its registrar. 'There is nothing religious about it,' he says. The burqa is not banned on the campus; only in the classroom and in examination halls. Even there, students are allowed to cover their heads with shawls. Most of the Muslim students are cooperative, he says. Only a couple of them would keep their faces covered. Teachers find it disconcerting to address such students. When told to lift the veil, these students ask 'where is the rule'? Even exam squads, trying to enforce discipline, are similarly rebuffed. Hence it was decided to insert the rule in the prospectus this year.
Prof Narahari does not intend to be heavy-handed. Persuasion has worked all these years and that will continue to be his line of action. The dress code is not meant as a control tool, he insists. There will be no harassment.
If the burqa is banned in the classroom what about the habit that Catholic nuns wear, I ask Prof Narahari. It is their usual attire and not a covering, he says. The habit is to the nun, in other words, what the cassock is to the priest and the robe is to the monk.
St Aloysius became co-ed, exactly 25 years ago, 107 years after it came into existence. It is an autonomous institution with its own syllabus and examination system. There are over 5,000 students; a little over half are girls. In some of the 16 post-graduate courses, their proportion is as high as 80 per cent. The district, of which Mangalore is the headquarters, is progressive. More girls are born than boys. It is highly literate too (89 per cent average, 93 per cent men, 84 per cent women). The Muslim community has to catch up on education. There are 201 Muslim girls in St Aloysius. My own sense is that it is more important to get more of them to attend college than to allow a matter of dress to stand in the way (because education is subversive). Those who take their religion literally perhaps would not have allowed girls into college. But if they did defying their pangs, why raise the degree of difficulty? My advice: let Muslim girls keep the burqa but not the veil.
Catholic priests never fail to excoriate girls showing too much skin, during Sunday mass. Now they make a fuss when little is shown! It all boils down to a sense of proportion. Prof Narahari says parents have not complained. Muslim community leaders should not too. St Aloysius can be accommodating. Let Muslim girls can cover their body and head. But they must keep their eyes open.

Meanwhile Here's some humble suggestions for the Title of the Book:

How To Spend Rs 205 Crore in Under 5 Years: A Travelogue

President Pratibha Patil, left, inaugurates the national immunization day by administering polio vaccine to a child  Saturday, Jan. 31, 2009.
in conclusion a suggestion by my twitter Colleague @ikaveri who says " President Patil should pen a travelogue instead. About all her foreign jaunts. And call it "How To Travel With Your Pallu Firmly On Head"
Hard to believe President Patil is nearly done with her term. Where did it go?!

MARKET SUMMARY

Markets today advanced further in choppy trade to end the day on firm note for the fourth successive session. Earlier, markets got off to a flattish start, reflecting mixed trend in global equity markets. Indices later started advancing in post-noon trade. Despite volatility, arising out of global cues, indices closed firm on the penultimate trading session of the week. Benchmark indices NIFTY and SENSEX closed higher by 0.61% and 0.64%, respectively. Broader markets, too, reflected positive mood with BSE Midcap and BSE Small cap indices gaining by 0.25% and 0.27%, respectively.

On the sectoral front, BSE AUTO(+2.05%), BSE HEALTHCARE(+1.18%) BSE FMCG (+0.96%) and BSE METAL (+0.80%) outperformed the broader markets, whereas BSE CAPITAL GOODS (-0.89%), BSE POWER (-0.78%) and BSE OIL & GAS (-0.59%) were the major underperformers.

Prominent stocks that stood out today with positive action were OBEROI REALITY, TATA GLOBAL, DIVIS LAB, COAL INDIA and HDFC BANK, whereas ACC, BHEL, IL, IDEA, UNION BANK and REL.CAP were significant losers.

Asian markets closed mixed earlier today with Hang Seng and Strait Times posting gains of 1.03% and 0.25%, respectively, whereas Nikkei posted losses of 0.82%. European markets, currently, are trading in green, with gains in the range of 0.5 to 0.6%.

Trade Highlights for the day

Strides Arcolab Ltd: Strides Arcolab hit a 52-week high in today’s trade at Rs 653.70. The company received a nod from the US FDA for marketing the generic cancer treatment injection Cisplatin in the US market. The US market for generic Cisplatin is pegged at approximately $10 million. The share ended the day at Rs 653.20 with gains 3.39%.

Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd: The counter tanked in today’s trade on the back of news that US investment bank Morgan Stanley downgraded the rating on the capital goods company’s share to “Underweight”. The downgrade was primarily initiated on the back of slack demand, resulting in an oversupply in the power equipment market in the country. The share ended the day at Rs 250.55 with losses of 3.93%.

ACC Ltd: The company fell in today’s trade on the back of disappointing Q1 earnings results, reporting a profit after tax of Rs 151.55 crore (-56.72% Y-o-Y) as against Rs 350.17 crore during the same time last year. This was largely the result of a on account one-time depreciation charges of Rs 335 crore for Q1CY12 as the method of providing depreciation on fixed assets with respect to captive power plants was changed from the Straight Line to Written Down Value during the current quarter. The share ended the day at Rs 1247.60 with losses of 3.82%.

Act of Giving

Act of Giving  – Happiness in Abundance

We spend our life, working hard, for more and more. Our greed to acquire never ends. Our schools, colleges and Universities are busy in developing new and advanced theories on the ‘Art of Acquiring'. Our parents, right from day one, look forward to our growth in terms of acquiring knowledge and wealth. The results are obvious. We earn what we aspire for. We aspire for wealth right from our childhood. This is true, generations after generations, and the result is that the wealth of the world has multiplied in geometrical progression, over a period of time. We have been so busy in our quest for wealth that we hardly have time to think or practice anything else. In the process we have lost our peace of mind and happiness. We are trapped in the mad race of generating wealth. Our life has become mechanical. Being tired of mechanical, monotonous and artificial life, we run after superficial happiness, to hotels, restaurants, night-clubs and what not. We lead a life, where we are of nobody and nobody is ours. Everyone ends at money. The result is unhappiness. The deeper we get into the mud of shortcut to happiness, more and more unhappy we are.

Money is a necessity of life. Earning money, by good means, is necessary and one must work hard for the same. What is bad and dangerous for life is getting obsessed with money – which has become the order of the day.

Work is worship. We must work hard to earn our livelihood and generate knowledge and wealth for self and the society and use this possession to garner happiness for self, family, friends and the society at large.

‘Act of Giving' is the simplest path to achieve happiness and complete accomplishment. Giving does not mean charity of wealth only. Each one of us can give a lot to the society. If you have wealth, give wealth to those who need the same for their basic needs. If you have been blessed with knowledge, impart the same extensively to create a more knowledgeable, matured and happy society. If you are not so knowledgeable, nor have spare money, please render physical service and give love to all those who need it.

‘Act of Giving' is a mindset. It has nothing to do with your possessions. The richest, the most knowledgeable, the most healthy may not necessarily be inclined to part with anything for others. On the contrary, the poorest or the weakest may be inclined to give everything that they possess to those who are needier.

‘Act of Giving' knows no boundary. It could be to the most loved one – may be your spouse, child, brother, sister or parent. It could be to your nearest relatives. It could be to your friends, colleagues or acquaintances. It could be to your neighbors. It could be to the social group with which you are closely associated. At macro level, it could be to the nation and the world at large. ‘Act of Giving' anything to anyone at any level always contributes to your happiness.

Aggressively indulge in the ‘Act of Giving'. Give it to those who need it the most. Give money, give knowledge, give service, give solace and foremost give love to one and all and remain happy.

‘Act of Giving' will bring you the greatest sense of accomplishment – many times more than the accomplishment that you get in earning and possessing knowledge and wealth. With each act of giving you get into a new relationship full of love, affection and respect.

GIVE AND CONTINUE GIVING AND REMAIN HAPPY FOR EVER.

Stealing in Prayer

Lack of composure in Prayer
Taken from Prohibitions that are taken too lightly - English Translation
Book by Sheikh Muhammed Salih Al-Munajjid

One of the worst forms of theft or cheating is cheating in prayer.
The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: "The worst type of thief is the one who steals from his prayer."
The people asked, "O Messenger of Allah, how can a person steal from his prayer?"
He said: "By not doing rukoo' and sujood properly."
(Reported by Imam Ahmad, 5/310; see also Saheeh al-Jaami, 997).
This lack of composure and failure to pause in rukoo and sujood and to stand up straight after rukoo or sit up properly between sujoods may be observed in many of those who pray, and hardly any mosque is free of examples of people who do not have the proper composure in prayer. Correct composure is one of the pillars of prayer, without which prayer is invalid.
This is a serious matter.
The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "A mans prayer is not good enough until his back is straight in rukoo and sujood."
(Reported by Abu Dawud, 1/533; see also Saheeh al-Jaami', 7224).
Abu Abdullaah al-Ashari reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) led his Companions in prayer, then he sat with a group of them. A man came in and started to pray, but made his movements rapid like a chicken pecking the ground.

The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Do you see this? Whoever dies having done this has died outside of the community of Muhammad, and his prayer is like a crow pecking blood. The person who bows then pecks in his sujood is like a hungry man who eats no more than one or two dates - what good will that do him?"
(Reported by Ibn Khuzaymah in his Saheeh 1/332; see also al-Albaani, Sifat Salaat al-Nabi (The Prophet's Prayer described), 131).
Zayd ibn Wahb said: "Hudhayfah saw a man who was not performing rukoo and sujood properly.
He said: You have not prayed, and if you were to die, you would die on a way other than that revealed by Allaah to Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him).'"
(Reported by al-Bukhaari, see al-Fath, 2/274).
Once a person is aware of this ruling, if he fails to perform prayer with the proper composure, he should repeat it and repent to Allah for what is past; he does not need to repeat all of his previous prayers, as is indicated by the hadeeth "Repeat your prayer, for you have not prayed."

Risk aversion back in action, USDINR looks to test 51.50...
Indian rupee extended its weakness for the second consecutive day against the US dollar on Wednesday, weighed by losses in domestic shares and persistent dollar demand from importers ahead of long weekend. While, rupee sentiments also dampened by global US dollar strength following Fed minutes which revealed that Fed is unlikely to introduce another round of QE.

Finally, it ended at 51.11 per dollar, off its intraday low of 51.24 per dollar but 39 paise weaker than Tuesday’s close of 50.72 per dollar.

After a long weekend, Indian rupee is set to open weaker around 51.22 vs. 51.11 closes on Wednesday, as risk aversion sentiments back in action in a holiday thin trade on softer US non-farm payroll data combined with renewed debt concern over Spain economic health, pushing US dollar higher across the board.
Global Markets Update

US Markets: Markets ended week on tepid note
Markets ended flat on Thursday, as positive investor sentiment lost momentum, as the Federal Reserve earlier in the week toned down the likelihood of a QE3. Economic data released on Friday could result in a negative market sentiment for the start of the new week, as the U.S. Nonfarm payrolls rose by 120,000 in March which was far less than an expected 203,000.

The US Markets closed flat, with the Dow and S&P ending with a negative bias of 15 pts (0.11%) and 1 pt (0.06%) while the NASDAQ ended with a positive bias of 12 pts (0.40%).

European Markets: Rising borrowing costs for Spain, pin down markets

Markets ended flat on Thursday, registering its third straight weekly loss, it’s the longest losing streak since August, as Spain’s rising borrowing costs hinted at debt concerns recur facing in the Euro area. Counters of banks, especially those with high exposure to peripheral debt were the major underperformers in the market.

European indices closed flat, with the FTSE and CAC closing with a positive bias of 20 pts (0.35%) and 6 pts (0.19%) while the DAX closed with a negative bias of 9 pts (0.13%) respectively. European Markets will remain closed today (9th April 2012) on account of ‘Easter Monday’.

Asian Markets:Markets open in the red, tracking weak global cues

Asian markets are currently trading in the red on the back of negative global cues from other world markets from last week. China's battle against inflation continues as consumer prices rose by a rate of 3.6% as against market expectations of 3.3%.

All Asian Markets including the Nikkei, Hang Seng and Strait Times are trading with losses of 140 pts (1.45%), 198 pts (0.95%) and 25 pts (0.84%). The SGX Nifty is currently trading at 5276 level, down 45 pts from its previous close.

DRINK WATER ON EMPTY STOMACH

It is popular in Japan today to drink water immediately after waking up every morning. Furthermore, scientific tests have proven its value. Written below is a description of use of water for readers of my Blog. I have made sincere effort to tell some of Benefits of Drinking Water on Empty stomach..

Human Blood is 95% Water and 5% other Hemoglobin, RBC, WBC, Iron, Sodium, Ca etc.. Our body needs min 4-5 liters of water every day, as we Think, as we Work, as we Speak, We loose Water every time, so there is a continues loss of water from our body. For old and serious diseases as well as modern illnesses the water treatment had been found successful by a Japanese medical society as a 100% cure for the following diseases:
Headache, body ache, heart system, arthritis, fast heart beat, epilepsy, excess fatness, bronchitis asthma, TB, meningitis, kidney and urine diseases, vomiting, gastritis, diarrhea, piles, diabetes, constipation, all eye diseases, womb, cancer and menstrual disorders, ear nose and throat diseases.

METHOD OF TREATMENT
1. As you wake up in the morning before brushing teeth, drink 4 x 160ml glasses of water

2. Brush and clean the mouth but do not eat or drink anything for 45 minute

3.. After 45 minutes you may eat and drink as normal.

This makes sense .. The Chinese and Japanese drink hot tea with their meals ..not cold water. Maybe it is time we adopt their drinking habit while eating!!! Nothing to lose, everything to gain...
For those who like to drink cold water, this article is applicable to you.
It is nice to have a cup of cold drink after a meal. However, the cold water will solidify the oily stuff that you have just consumed. It will slow down the digestion.
Once this 'sludge' reacts with the acid, it will break down and be absorbed by the intestine faster than the solid food. It will line the intestine.
Very soon, this will turn into fats and lead to cancer. It is best to drink hot soup or warm water after a meal.

A serious note about heart attacks:
· Women should know that not every heart attack symptom is going to be the left arm hurting,
· Be aware of intense pain in the jaw line.
· You may never have the first chest pain during the course of a heart attack.
· Nausea and intense sweating are also common symptoms.
· 60% of people who have a heart attack while they are asleep do not wake up.
· Pain in the jaw can wake you from a sound sleep. Let's be careful and be aware. The more we know, the better chance we could survive.

Human Brain needs a abundant water to function properly. It is Confirmed from the studies that human Brain can function creatively, when there is abundant water level in our body. Stop harassing of innocent Muslim youths: Muslim leaders to Govt.

India Muslim leaders ask goverment to Stop harassment and torture of innocent Muslim youths

Coming out bold and united perhaps first time on the issue, top Muslim leaders on Saturday asked the governments, police and intelligence agencies to stop harassment, illegal detention and torture of innocent Muslim youths in the name of fighting terrorism. They also demanded prosecution and punishment of all police and intelligence officials who have been involved in falsely implicating Muslim youths in terror cases.
The community leaders passed unanimous resolution on the aforesaid demands and other related issues at the National Convention on Muslim Youth Protection on 31st March 2012 at Mavalankar Hall, New Delhi. The convention was inaugurated by Justice Rajendar Sachar.
Dr. Mohammad Manzoor Alam
Terming UAPA a blot bigger than TADA and POTA on the country's reputation, Dr. Mohammad Manzoor Alam, General Secretary, All India Milli Council, demanded its repeal.

The convention was attended by eminent dignitaries from different walks of life, including legal experts and human rights activists and representatives from organizations and institutions of minorities. The convention was organised by All India Milli Council and supported by all major Muslim organisations including All India Muslim Majlis Mushawarat, Jamaat-e-Islami Hind, Jamiat Ulama-I-Hind, Welfare Party of India, Coordination Committee for Indian Muslims and Markazi Jamiat Ulema.

At the convention were discussed various related issues like draconian law such UAPA, ban on SIMI and compensation to the youths acquitted of terror charges.

Syed Shahabuddin
Addressing the convention, former MP and diplomat Syed Shahabuddin stressed on a structure to fight against such atrocities. “We need an all-India set-up to fight against such kind of atrocities,” he said and demanded compensation for victims. “We will have to demand ransom not only compensation for those youths who have been acquitted from the court of law.” Defending against state atrocities is a question of humanity not for Muslim only, he added.
Justice Rajendra Sachar addressing the Gathering
Maulana Kalbe Sadique, Vice President, All India Muslim Personal Law Board, said: “The government must know that Allah never forgives oppression and cruelty and doesn’t like the oppressors.” He appealed to Indian Muslims to get united on the name of oneness of God.

Mohammad Amir Khan, the person who was recently acquitted after 14 years in jail in various terror cases, moved the audience into tears when he narrated his heart-rending story.“It is good sign that the people are discussing on this topic now, but when I was arrested 14 years ago then no one was ready to listen to anything. Everyone had boycotted me and my family,” he said.

Amir strongly condemned the lethargic attitude of Muslim leaders and organizations on the issue. “After my arrest my late father had visited several Muslim leaders but nobody helped us. My father has died 10 years ago and I couldn’t see his face last time,” he said.

Narrating his sad tale, Amir said: “I was kidnapped and the cases, more than my age in number, were fabricated against me. They made me naked, poured petrol in my private parts, gave electric shocks, removed my nails and did a lot more shameful and painful acts which I can’t narrate here.”

“Why our Muslim organizations didn’t fulfill their duty? Why they believed police versions and media reports? If it is hard to reach me then they could have reached to my parents. This is not only my question but it is question of hundreds of people who have been falsely implicated in such cases and still living behind bars. There are people in jail who even can’t afford a soap of Rs 10. Nobody is here to look after their family,” Amir said.

He also lambasted Muslim groups for not coming up to offer any financial help to such victims.
“We are demanding compensation from the government. It is okay but the question is, what is our duty? Why arent’Muslim organizations constituting a cell to compensate those people who are suffering?”He announced he is going to write a book on his life.

Dr. SQR Ilyas, General Secretary, Welfare Party of India, raised the issue of ban on SIMI (Students Islamic Movement of India) and said if the community had stood then against the ban in 2001, the situation would not have reached to such state.

“We are facing state terrorism. The government has initiated a war against its own people. This style has been started after 9/11 when the SIMI was banned by the NDA government. The ban is still continuing. When the SIMI was first time banned then Muslim organizations were silent. The practice of false implication of Muslim youths will continue until the ban on SIMI is lifted. The government must lift ban from SIMI immediately,” demanded Ilyas.
E M Abdur Rahman, chairman Popular Front of India echoed Ilyas and said: “I am happy with this convention but it is too late. It should have been organized 11 years ago when the SIMI was banned. If it had happened then, we would not have had need of this convention now.”

Resolution :
1. This national convention condemns systematic campaign aimed at demoralizing Muslim youth and others. This national convention resolves to ensure protection of Muslim youth and those belonging to other minorities and weaker sections as a whole---socially, morally, economically, legally etc as enshrined in the Constitution of India.

2. All unjust and undemocratic laws impinging upon right to life, liberty, expression and association must be repealed forthwith. Laws on sedition must be repealed immediately.

3. Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967 (UAPA) is a black law. Its presence in the statute book is blot on the country- bigger than TADA and POTA. Its draconian provisions and their abuse against Muslims, Tribals and other weaker sections of society has attained menacing proportions. UAPA must be repealed immediately.
The Convention calls upon the government to withdraw Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Bill, 2011, immediately, as the first step.
The Convention emphasizes that all anti-terror and other drastic legislations should only be emergency legislations and should not be put on the statute books permanently. They must be subjected to periodic review.

4. The continuous ban on the Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI) since 2001 is unjustified, illegal and unconstitutional. Similarly, the declaration of SIMI as “terrorist organization” is also without basis. The ban on SIMI must be lifted immediately and its name should be removed from the schedule of “terrorist organisations” of the UAPA. SIMI must be allowed to function within the constitutional and democratic framework of the country.

5. Harassment, illegal detention and torture of innocent Muslim youth and those belonging to other communities in the name of fighting terrorism must be stopped. All police and intelligence officials involved in foisting false cases must be prosecuted and punished expeditiously.

6. Intelligence agencies must have a statutory act ensuring parliamentary control and accountability including audit control by the Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG). Further, no intelligence agency, including proposed National Counter Terrorism Centre (NCTC), should be given powers to arrest.

7. All pending cases involving alleged terrorist offences must be subjected to a comprehensive review by a sitting judge of the Supreme Court. The commission should also include cases of harassment, illegal detention and false implication.

8. Prosecution of all cases under now-defunct TADA and POTA must be closed.

9. All pending cases involving alleged terrorist offences must be expeditiously disposed of by ordering their hearing on day-to-day basis.

10. Compensation should be awarded mandatorily to all persons acquitted of terrorist offences.

11. A comprehensive law providing for reparation for victims and punishment for wrongful prosecutions must be enacted.

This convention decides to launch a campaign named “Movement for Justice” for taking forward the above demands and to secure justice, social, political and economic, for all.
